About Us

Ainon Baptist Church began in the early 19th century and was the first established church in Tongwynlais; some 180 years on we are still alive and witnessing in the 21st century.

We are an independent Baptist church based in the village of Tongwynlais, just north of Cardiff, South Wales, UK. We believe we have a calling to be “Salt & Light” (Matt 5:13-16) and a vision to reach people with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

We are a seeker-friendly, welcoming church. If you don't normally attend a church (or even if you do) please feel free to come and join us. You will receive a very warm welcome and there should be no reason for you to feel uncomfortable or awkward in one of our services. We regularly have visitors who may not have been to church since childhood, or for many years. These visitors usually feel very at home and relaxed with us. We have a Sunday club in our back hall during the service for children as well as a youth room for our young people. We often have an impromptu creche in the same room as the main service (parents can keep a watchful eye).

We start with the whole church together at 10.30am with a few contemporary worship songs. After a little while Sunday club & the youth leave for their classes. One or two other items follow, then a talk by our Pastor, one of our Elders, Church members or a visiting preacher. We finish around 11.45am. We then enjoy refreshments and usually hang around for a chat after the service.

Every fifth week we have our special family service. We often have visitors as this is a very family/child friendly service. Our songs and stories are very stimulating visually and entertaining for the children as well as the adults. The story is usually followed with one of our giant computer-projected quizzes. GREAT FUN!

We have Communion on the second Sunday of the month. We believe in Baptism as practiced in the Bible. Once or twice a year we have a special baptismal service.

Around us

The church sits in the shadow of the beautiful fairytale 'Castell Coch'. Built upon the remains of a genuine 13th century castle, it was probably founded by a Welsh lord in the twlefth century. It was rebuilt in the 1870s for the 3rd Marquess of Bute to a design by William Burges and is supposed to be a reproduction of a small medieval Welsh chieftain's stronghold, although the conical roofs to the towers are more European in style. The name means 'Red Castle'.
